Abstract

“The real journey of discovery consists not of seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.” – Marcel Proust

This workshop explores the wonderful privilege of making the Red House; the building for Plymouth School of Creative Arts. The school was made with making in mind. Through sharing our experiences and reflections we will explore the significance of space and it’s relationship to learning and development. We look at the shaping of the studio ecology, which would include each individual’s relationship to the space and to other makers. The studio ecology could be seen as an armature for creativity, making, discovering and performing.

The workshop will facilitate participants to inquire into the following questions:

  • How is the space a provocation for thinking, making and being different?
  • How do we seek and benefit from difference?
  • How can we facilitate the room to disappear?
  • What’s the significance of Transparency?

Plymouth School of Creative Arts opened in Millbay, Plymouth in September 2013. Our purpose-built school opened fully in February 2015. In making a school, we aim to transform the way creative action can enhance learning and development to fulfill our purpose of Creating Individuals, Making Futures.
