Abstract
This session will explore the exhibition project Ahead of the Curve: new china from China. Ahead of the Curve is a collaborative project between The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, Stoke-on-Trent, Bristol Museums, Galleries & Archives, The Wilson, Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum and twocities gallery, Shanghai. The main result of the project was a touring UK exhibition of contemporary Chinese ceramics and glass (ending at the end of May 2015).
The curators involved in the project will explain the process behind the idea, the selection of artists and work and talk about the exhibition and its legacy. Themes that will be covered include:
- The ways in which artists draw on Chinese culture in their work
- International influences on contemporary Chinese craft
- The practice of commissioning from craftspeople by some artists
- Craft as a medium for concepts- what do contemporary Chinese ceramics and glass say?
- The effects of the art market on contemporary Chinese craft
- Parallels with British potters and common concerns
- A new spirit of contemporary Chinese craft?
- Trans-cultural curating and translation and mistranslation of meaning.
