Abstract

Glastonbury Tents – up-cycling project. ‘From Mud to Lux’

Every year at the close of the world famous Glastonbury Music Festival, thousand tents are left abandoned in the
fields.

This represents an environmental issue, which is in direct opposition to the ethos of the festival.

In response to this problem, the students of Plymouth College of Art, Textile Design programme, teamed up with
the company ‘Wrag Wrap’ and Glastonbury to make a design statement about the ‘value’ of these throw away
tents.

The proposed presentation will give insight into the student’s individual approach to the tent material, design and
up-cycling task, illustrating their method of working, research, design development and consideration of the
target audience and pricing.

The project is still ‘live’, as negotiations are currently taking place to exhibit the prototypes at this years
Glastonbury Festival.

Contributions to the presentation, will be made by the student group and myself. The presentation will be
illustrated with a PowerPoint, a short film and actual design prototypes produced by the students.
